ARTFEM, Women Artists International Biennial of Macau opened in March 8th, 2018 to attend to the needs of women artists as well as to fill the lack of international art exhibitions in Macau SAR.
In a world with a yearly calendar filled with Biennials, marking space is not easy. Therefore, its founder, architect Carlos Marreiros decided to focus entirely on women artists who are active.
This is an old project, that started in 2000 but had to wait to take shape. Its budget is small, as it is commonplace with young events, but there is space to grow. A good omen is the fact that the Biennale is endorsed by Paula Rego, the legendary 83-year-old Portuguese artist, who serves as this editions’ godmother. Her daughter Victoria Willing is coming to Macau in representation of her mother.
The president of Albergue SCM is moderately optimistic about the show’s growth, as a greater show requires a larger budget, more international exposure, and the capacity to attract influential people – critics, curators, artists – from the international art world.
The biennial has always presented itself as international. However, the region of the Pearl Delta is a natural location for the biennale’s expansion.
