Born 1961, Bandung. Lives and works in Yogyakarta, Lab, and Passau. An artist-researcher, until 2000 Arahmaiani sourced the roots of patriarchalism and prejudice against Indonesian women. After 2000 she started delving into global concerns, including the imbalance of the natural world. This would bring her to Tibet, where she has journeyed the spiritual roots of Indonesian Islam, one which is imbued of Buddhist elements unknown to the majority of Indonesians.
